Some time tomorrow, Tom Ascol will attempt, once again, to present a resolution to the floor of the Southern Baptist Convention calling “Southern Baptists to repent of our failure to maintain responsible church membership.” I do not know if the resolution will reach the floor, much less meet with approval, but as for [...]

Ecclesiastical Hitchhikers
Post Datum: 2008-09-18 17:16:55
I’m reading R. Kent Hughes’ book, Disciplines of a Godly Man. In his chapter on the church, he describes the rampant aversion to meaningful church membership. He calls the phenomenon “ecclesiastical hitchhikers.” He writes: Church attendance is infected with a malaise of conditional loyalty which has produced an army of ecclesiastical hitchhikers. The hitchhiker’s thumb says, [...]...lees meer

from the Baptist Faith & Message 2000: God alone is Lord of the conscience, and He has left it free from the doctrines and commandments of men which are contrary to His Word or not contained in it. Church and state should be separate. The state owes to every church protection and full freedom in the [...]...lees meer
Jesus the Evangelist
Post Datum: 2008-10-10 23:55:42
I just read a forthcoming book, Jesus the Evangelist, from Reformation Trust. The title takes a practical look at the example of Jesus and his gospel proclamation and holds it up as a pattern for today’s believers to follow. Author Richard D. Phillips uses an expository approach to the subject with a close reading of [...]...lees meer

With all the church groups that come to work in Lakeshore, sometimes we also receive a blessing from families who come on there own. Along with the 11 church groups and 180+ folks last week, a wonderful couple, Scott and Myrtle, came to help. I did not get to spend much time with them, [...]...lees meer

Not long after Katrina had ravaged South Mississippi, an outreach group of folks from the First Baptist Church of Elkins, WV and the Rotary Club from the same city ended up at the Lakeshore Baptist Church on the western side of Waveland, MS. Although the church was completely destroyed, there“s a slab there, the people [...]...lees meer

MP3 Sermons
Post Datum: 2008-09-18 17:17:25
Several months ago I began walking for exercise. Subsequently, I have become an mp3 sermon junkie. To keep my mind occupied while my body burns calories, I load my mp3 player with sermons and hit the pavement. Weather permitting, I listen to a dozen or more sermons a week. The internet offers a steady stream [...]...lees meer
